Shopify development services: store setup, custom themes, integrations, migrations and headless builds.

Short answer: Shopify development services cover everything from setting up a store on an existing theme to building a custom theme, connecting your other systems, or building a headless storefront. Small jobs start at a few hundred dollars. A store on a customised theme typically costs $1,000 to $9,000, and a fully custom theme $5,000 to $45,000 or more, depending on the hours involved.

Shopify makes it possible to open a store without a developer, and plenty of merchants do. You need development help when the store has to look like your brand rather than a template, connect to systems Shopify does not handle on its own, or load faster than an app-heavy theme allows. This guide covers what each service involves, what it costs, and how to hire well.

What Shopify development services include

ServiceWhat it involvesWhen you need it
Store setupProducts, collections, payments, shipping, taxes and an existing theme configuredLaunching your first store
Theme customisationChanging an existing theme's layout, sections and stylesThe theme is close, but not quite right
Custom theme developmentA theme designed and built from scratch for your brandYour brand and conversion rate matter more than speed to launch
Apps and integrationsConnecting Shopify to your ERP, warehouse, accounting or CRM, or building a private appData has to flow between Shopify and other systems
MigrationMoving products, customers, orders and URLs from another platformSwitching from WooCommerce, Magento or a custom store
Speed optimisationRemoving unused apps and scripts, optimising images and theme codePages load slowly, especially on phones
Headless storefrontA custom front end built on Shopify's APIs, with Shopify still running the back endYou need full control over the experience and have the budget to maintain it

How Shopify themes work

It helps to know what a developer is working with. Shopify themes are written in Liquid, Shopify's templating language. Modern themes are built from sections: reusable blocks that you can add, remove and reorder in the theme editor without touching code.

That is why how a theme is built matters as much as how it looks. A well-built custom theme gives your team sections they can rearrange to create new pages and campaigns themselves. A badly built one hard-codes everything, so every change means paying a developer.

Theme customisation or a custom theme?

Paid themes in the Shopify Theme Store are a one-off cost of a few hundred dollars. The ones we checked in October 2026 ranged from $150 to $450, and there were 24 free themes. Customising a good theme is the right choice for most new stores: it is quicker, cheaper and well tested.

Comparison of three Shopify approaches: customising a theme suits most new stores; a custom theme suits distinctive brands, unusual products or stores where conversion gains are worth a lot; headless suits larger brands with a development team.
Which approach fits, from a customised theme to a headless storefront.

A custom theme makes sense when:

  • Your brand needs to look distinctive, not like other stores on the same theme.
  • You have unusual products, such as configurable items, bundles or subscriptions, that standard product pages handle badly.
  • You are already selling enough that a better conversion rate is worth tens of thousands of dollars a year.
  • You keep adding apps to make a theme do things it was not designed for, and the store is getting slower.

What is headless Shopify?

A headless store uses Shopify for products, checkout and orders, but replaces the storefront customers see with a separately built front end. Shopify's own toolkit for this is Hydrogen, which works with React frameworks and connects to Shopify through its Storefront API.

Headless gives you full control over design and performance, and makes it easier to combine your store with content from a separate CMS. The trade-off is cost: you are building and maintaining a web application instead of a theme, and many apps from the Shopify App Store will not work on a headless front end without extra development. It is usually worth it only for larger brands with a development team or budget to keep it running.

How much do Shopify development services cost?

Like most web work, Shopify development is priced on hours. Freelancers and agencies typically charge $50 to $150 an hour. Using that range, here is what common jobs cost. The hours are our estimates:

JobTypical hoursAt $50 an hourAt $150 an hour

Store setup on a customised theme20 to 60$1,000$9,000

Migration from another platform40 to 150$2,000$22,500

Range chart of Shopify development costs: small fixes $100 to $1,500, store setup on a customised theme $1,000 to $9,000, migration $2,000 to $22,500, custom theme $5,000 to $45,000, headless storefront $15,000 to $45,000 or more.
Typical cost by type of Shopify job, at $50 to $150 an hour.

On top of development, budget for your Shopify plan and apps. As of October 2026, Shopify's plans started at $19 a month billed yearly, and Shopify Plus started at $2,300 a month. Our guide to how much a website costs covers running costs in more detail.

Can I hire someone to build my Shopify store?

Yes, and there are three main routes:

  • Shopify's Partner Directory. Shopify lists freelancers and agencies that work with merchants in its Partner Directory, which is a sensible place to start a shortlist.
  • A freelancer. Good value for setup, theme changes and smaller projects. Check their past stores and how they handle work after launch.
  • An agency. Better for custom themes, integrations and headless builds, where you need design, development and project management together, and someone accountable for all of it.

Questions to ask a Shopify developer

  • Can I see stores you have built, and talk to the owners? Look at them on your phone and check how fast they load.
  • Will my team be able to edit pages without you? Ask to see the sections and settings in the theme editor, not just the finished design.
  • Which apps will the store depend on, and what do they cost each month? Each app adds a subscription, and many add scripts that slow the store down.
  • How is the theme code managed? A good developer keeps it in version control and tests changes on a copy of the theme before publishing.
  • Who owns the theme and any custom apps? You should, with the code handed over at the end of the project.
  • How will you protect my search rankings during a migration? Every old product and category URL needs a redirect. Our technical SEO audit checklist covers what to check before and after.
